In a partnership as improbable as it is inspired, where box scores meet the Beat Generation, the Lowell Spinners have teamed up with the Jack Kerouac Center to launch a season-long fundraising campaign. The effort will support the restoration of Saint Jean Baptiste Church, recently purchased by Zach Bryan as the future home of the Jack Kerouac Center.
“Kerouac’s legacy as an amateur artist-athlete will serve as one of our guiding pillars for the revived franchise. We are inspired by Jack’s amateur play and lifelong love of baseball,” said John Croteau, Lowell Spinners Chairman & CEO.
Long before he became the voice of a generation, Jack Kerouac played baseball for Lowell High School and the summer Twilight League. His devotion to the game never faded; all his life, Jack played an elaborate fantasy baseball league that he created himself, complete with hand-crafted baseball cards.
“Jack Kerouac wrote about movement, about people, about searching,” said Jim Sampas, Literary Executor of the Estate of Jack Kerouac. “But all of that came out of Lowell. It shaped who he was. Baseball was part of his life here, just like the streets, the people, the city. Seeing those worlds come together like this feels sincere who he really was.”
Proceeds will help transform the former Saint Jean Baptiste Church into the Jack Kerouac Center, which will include exhibitions, a 1,500-cap room for music and storytelling, a recording studio, classrooms, and a home for these and other archives. Throughout the season, fans will see activations, events, and ways to get involved with not just the team, but with what this project is becoming. Jack Kerouac Night is scheduled for August 1st.
“This project is Lowell,” said Sylvia Cunha, Director of Marketing & Business Development for the Jack Kerouac Estate. “We’re creating a cultural hub that’s going to take a lot of work to get done, and we need partners, support, and the community behind it. We’re grateful to the Lowell Spinners for stepping up and being part of this with us and helping move these fundraising efforts forward.”
